There’s an old adage: ‘Blood is thicker than water’, which everyone takes to mean family should come first. In fact, the original phrase – ‘the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb’, meaning the bonds between men who go into battle is greater than any between family, even brothers – has the opposite meaning. There are other phrases whose meanings have flipped over time: ‘You only live once’, ‘charity begins at home’, and ‘funny as an Adam Sandler movie’.But the first one springs to mind when looking at 100 BLOODY ACRES, because this 2012 Australian horror-comedy deals with two brothers, and the circumstances which could threaten whatever they shared. And it was written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, two other brothers!
It opens in the Australian Outback, where we meet Reg Morgan (Damon Herriman, from TV’s JUSTIFIED), one half of a pair of siblings who run a blood and bone fertiliser business for the local farms, a business we later learn is struggling. While out making deliveries (and collecting roadkill for the grinder – hey, man, reduce, reuse and recycle!), he encounters a smashed van, and a dead victim behind the wheel. So Reg calls the local police and goes on his way – hah, just kidding! He bundles the body into the back of his truck and hides it behind some fertiliser sacks.
The Morgan Boys are good boys at heart, I’m sure…Returning to his route, Reg then encounters more living people on the road, three young tourists who’d been on their way to a music festival: Sophie (Anna McGahan, UNDERBELLY: RAZOR), her boyfriend James (Oliver Ackland, THE PROPOSITION) and their mutual English friend Wes (Jamie Kristian), with whom Sophie has been secretly having an affair. The trio’s car had broken down, and though Reg is understandably reluctant to involve himself with them given the cargo he’s now carrying, he relents – it may have something to do with Sophie’s cleavage – and lets the boys ride in the back of the truck while he gets acquainted with Sophie in the front (Herriman invests Reg with a vulnerability and country charm reminiscent of Tony Perkins’ Norman Bates).
This is gonna get messy…But you know where this is going, don’t you? Reg takes the trio to his home, and his brother Lindsay (Angus
Sampson, DARKNESS FALLS and the upcoming MAD MAX movie).Lindsay proves to be the dominant, more pragmatic of the pair, tying up the three tourists and feeding the crash victim into the grinder – it seems that the fertiliser mix is richer when you add humans. Especially humans who are still live and kicking. They’ve already proven this, having fed previous accident victims into the grinder, so what’s a few more?
100 BLOODY ACRES worked for me. Horror comedies can be hit or miss, but this worked, partly because the laughs (and the suspense) came naturally from the characters and the plot, as well as from some bloody sight gags and laugh out loud dialogue using crisp Australian sayings (including one I’ll be using whenever I can: “We’re not here to fuck spiders.”).
I was right…The characterisation in the script offers nuances one doesn’t normally see in mainstream movies, let alone genre movies: Reg is guilty of crimes, yes, but he has the potential for mercy and restraint, and is really hamstrung by his need to impress his brother, the more psychotic Lindsay. Sophie, while tied up, tries to seduce Reg into freeing her, and after this attempt fails has to face James about what has gone on between Wes and her (without the movie judging or condemning her for her infidelity). And the photography of the isolated feeling of the Outback lends credence to the idea that this sort of thing could happen out there. And they don’t shy away from the blood and guts when it’s needed, which is always welcome round these parts.
Mother always warned you about keeping your hands to yourself!With 100 BLOODY ACRES, the Cairnes Brothers set out to do something different from what Australian horror was offering cinemagoers, and I think they’ve succeeded. It was certainly free of the usual kangaroos, dingos and other stereotypes you expect (we still have the murderous ignorant Outback folk, but then without them we’d just have a bloodier version of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT). That this was the Cairnes’ first feature is even more impressive.
